If I am only my thoughts

Loving is a folk-pop band of three members that, at the beginning of this year, introduced their underrated album titled If I am Only My Thoughts. This album of 11 tracks, of which many are instrumental pieces, is their second relevant album and portrays the band’s connection with nature, philosophy, loneliness, love, melancholy, life, and even astronomical and earth elements such as the sun, moon, rivers, etc. This album has the purpose of giving the listener peace with the feeling of having some alone time expecting one’s thoughts and dreams, all this to the rhythm of soothing guitars, violins, pianos, and soft drums. 

Loving took their personal experience of living in a distant forest by themselves and recorded their album based on the idea that loneliness, which is not being lonely at all, is to be accompanied by yourself. This album illustrates the band's emotional and physical feelings mixed with their experiences and philosophical views and beliefs. With this, they took what they imagined would be their thoughts if they were songs and created this album. 

They thought of doing art for everyone by including songs that fit for many sad emotions, thinking about this album as a space for every type of moment in everybody's life. Vintage sounds gave this band a characteristic and specific aesthetic in their sounds. Music reviewer Joe Boothby quoted: “They give a vibe that is almost as if Loving was an indie band that came straight out of the early ’70s, as opposed to the first year of the 2020’s”. 

Deep reflections are made in the album: self-recognition, consciousness, and confusion give an essence to the song Nihilist Kite Flyer, one of the most thoughtful tracks, as well as If I Am Only My Thoughts, a song that represents the philosophical phrase “I think, so, therefore, I am” among many others. Finding a perfect way of picturing what our thoughts might be if we dig deep down into our feelings and fears that are usually hiding.  

The band took the idea of thinking for the audience on what life might feel and turned those ideas into songs. Visions is one of them; it deeply shows everyone’s dreams in life, to get people to think further than what they believe to see typically, and normally in life and seeing a bigger picture. Loving looked for a way to create an atmosphere that could make up for all the pressure of existence, providing a safe space for one to think and admire the small things of living.
