The Beauty of self expression

By: Catalina Zárate Osorio 10A

I personally believe there is something so beautiful about self-expression. The diversity that is found in it, the authenticity that it portrays, the different feelings that it shows, the way it talks about you without even needing to say a word, how in some cases it reflects where you are from, your religion, or your culture. And even though all these things are beautiful, the most amazing thing about it is that everyone's form of self-expression is entirely different, completely unique, beautiful, and valid. People express themselves in so many ways. Some people choose to express through their makeup, creating alluring paintings or designs on their faces. Other people that express through their clothes, changing society's expectations of how they should dress. Some others through their hair by changing its color or cutting it in so many different ways. People that express through tattoos, printing symbols in their skin that have the most overwhelming meanings or that just makes them feel like themself. And I could keep going, but you get the point. So many magnificent ways of self-expression, and yet most of the time, we all look the same. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't look like other people because maybe you do look like others while being true to yourself. The problem is when you look like others because you are not sure of who you are.  And it's ironic how we live years and years with ourselves, and yet it is like we are in charge of a body that isn't giving us the whole information.

Self-expression has helped me to know a little more about myself, and at the same time, it came from allowing myself to learn who I am. I decided to dye my hair a couple of weeks ago; it was something I've wanted to do for a really long time now but was terrified to do it and to commit to it. In the end, I grew myself with courage and dyed my hair purple. The color was something unexpected for me, for my family and my friends because purple has never been a relevant color in my life. It was never my favorite color or one that I really liked, never had chosen something special because it is purple, and I'll probably never do. But I found meaning in it, and that's why I chose purple. And that's why self-expression is so beautiful because there's a meaning to it.  And by meaning, I don't refer to something spiritual or deep, but to something authentic, something that could just be " I like it. "

And I think it is important to understand that you should never settle for "I could have done this" or "I could have been this." Express who you are, show how you feel, and do it in the way you like. With makeup, with art, in the way you dress, in how your hair looks, in the way you dance or even in how your room is decorated. So many options and none of them is wrong. There's no right or wrong in this; there are no rules and no expectations. There are a bunch of humans that just want to feel comfortable and want to be who they are, just like you. So this is my invitation for everyone reading this to search for that thing that makes you feel like yourself. You can try as many things as you want, and you can change them as many times as you want. But don't lose yourself trying to be something you are not, nor let the beauty of self-expression disappear in you.
