Feminist anthems
Manuela Herrán 10ºA
Over time, many women have got the power to raise their voices and become influential icons in the feminist society. Some of them channeled their artistic abilities and rage into powerful, outstanding, and influential songs. Today I'm going to show you some of them in hopes of inspiring and empowering you.
The first song I want to highlight is “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore, which came out in 1963 in her album called Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts. The way she uses this song expresses her seeks freedom, how she wants to be herself. Also, to have the power over her own body and over what she can or can't say. Finally, that she doesn't belong to a man; she is not made for a man as she belongs to herself, and therefore they don't own her.

Secondly, we have “Just a Girl” by No Doubt, which was written by Gwen Stefani and Thomas Dumont, and came out in the album Tragic Kingdom. This piece shows how she is much more than the demure stereotype of a girl, which she explains needs to be protected because it's very fragile and petite, who has no rights and lives in captivity.

The next song is “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, which basically talks about how she feels that in the industry, she is being disadvantaged and not treated properly. She emphasizes that all she wants, needs, and asks in return is respect. So this song is definitely a great feminism anthem because it's just what we, women, deserve.

This final song is definitely more recent than the rest. It's by the upcoming band “The Regrettes,” and it is called “A living human girl.” In this tune, the lead singer, Lydia Night, points out the imperfections and the not so pretty things of girls, like pimples, stretch marks, among others. She emphasized that all of those “imperfections” are completely fine because we are all different, and we don't need to be perfect.

Finally, to close this selection of anthems, here are some honorable mentions: “Rebel Girl”- Bikini Kill, “Cherry Bomb”- The Runaways, “Run the World (Girls)”- Beyoncé, ”9 to 5”- Dolly Parton, “Juice” -Lizzo, among many other amazing tracks by powerful independent women. My invitation to you is to rise and listen to these amazing artists and become the women you want to be, not what others want you to be.
