This is why you should take up a musical instrument.

By: Luisa Lafaurie 10ºA

I am sure most people have wanted to learn to play an instrument at some point in their lives but never did. For many years, I was one of them too. I never thought that music was my thing, I had always been a dancer, but now I can't picture myself without an instrument. When I was 14, my uncle lent me his ukulele, and I loved it. I did not know that it was so easy to pick up, and since then, I have learned a lot more. When I started to play, I remember learning songs that had only five chords: G C D Am, and F, because those were the only ones I knew and the other ones seemed too difficult for me, but now I play the ukulele, bass and I am starting to learn guitar, and even though it has been very challenging, and I am still learning. It is also an exciting and fun experience, and I even want to try to learn more instruments like piano or drums.

I think that it is never too late to start to learn an instrument. Many people find happiness, excitement, and relief when listening to music. Now imagine how playing it would make you feel. For me, it is like I am in my world. When I am learning a new song, time passes, and I do not even notice, and this makes me feel relaxed and in consonance with myself.

Now, I am going to tell you why you should try to learn an instrument!

First of all, the benefits for the brain of learning an instrument are greater than any other brain-enhancing activities like jigsaw, puzzles, or sudokus.  And although the biggest benefits are achieved if you learn at a young age, playing music can improve the brain at any moment of your life. Learning to play music also can relieve stress, help to improve your patience, and make you confident and comfortable with your self-expression. It can also give you a sense of achievement and pride, and even improve your memory! Researchers have found that learning to play a musical instrument can enhance verbal memory, spatial reasoning, and literacy skills. Playing an instrument uses both sides of your brain, which strengthens memory power and your cognitive skills. Lastly, playing an instrument is simply fun and cool! How many times has someone told you they can play an instrument, and you have thought that is awesome and that you wish you could say the same?

Now I am not going to tell you that this is easy, it is challenging and requires patience and time. You are not going to become the best musician overnight, and I know this can be frustrating, and you will want to quit many times. But believe me when I tell you, the moment you manage to play a song with no mistakes, or when you finally get the tempo correctly, you will feel so proud, and you'll know everything was worth it. This is a very enriching skill, and I know you won't regret this decision.
