Sense and read

By: Gabriela Ardila 10ºB

The 23rd of April has been a day of celebration established by UNESCO since 1995. Nonetheless, just readers are likely to know about it. Today I am writing for those who enjoy holding with their precious hands a book, and for those who do not like to read, as trite as it may sound, I invite you to a world you will not regret.
I hear the usual sound of an opening door. Mom walks in with what seems to be a small package against her chest. She leaves her purse in the same spot as yesterday and waves at me. I approached her with a soft kiss, and meanwhile, she handed me the package. Precipitation of euphoria floods me because I know what is inside that awful wrapper, so I run about 20 steps to my room, grab some scissors, and open the package just for the long-awaited book to revel in my eyes. Its wonderful colors amaze me; black and sober white at the bottom of the cover with a picture of a tiny little girl playing the violin. I open its pages just for the smell of ink to join the wind that blows past my window. It smells new. Its pages are smooth but with gritty jolts. I stick my face to them to immerse myself in their complexity. I finish my ritual and leave the book on my nightstand, anxiously awaiting to be read hours before bedtime….
Since a few years ago until now, E-Books came into the readers' lives. Some people have been caught by the fact of reading a book through an electronic device. I do not know if it is because they save money by buying books online, or if they do not like to fill their house with paper, but by doing so, they are leaving aside the wonder of experiencing a reading with all five senses. To commemorate Book Day, there is no better thing to do than reminding the old mind how nice it is to have a book in hand. Scientifically speaking, there are a huge amount of traits why being able to physically read has become more popular. It helps the person to absorb more information and children to become readers too, it helps readers have a firmer grasp of their progress, it is easier on the eyes, is less likely to get distracted, it can help the sleep schedule, etc. Yet I do not want to take that path. Feelings. I want to talk about all the charming feelings on earth caused by physical books. Reading makes a soul complete, and to fill every level until it is full, the person has to experience every peculiarity. The excitement when opening its first page. Intrigue, when wondering what it will be about, how it will develop, and what more feelings the story will bring. Conformity, when you have already read it for a certain amount of time and feel comfortable with its characteristics. Absolute happiness or deep sadness, with its ending. A relief that can only be found when leaving the finished book in the library. A sense of security, when you let time go by and know that its pages will take on a different smell and color. Love, when we find another use for it as passing wisdom from generation.
Sense and read dear reader. To talk about reading is to enter a parallel universe where the journey is infinite and unique, which could not be fulfilled to its maximum transcendental capacity if you do not feel the book. Develop yourself and allow yourself to grow as a person. I told you, I put my soul into this - it is a world you will not regret.
