Just the way it is
By: Mariana Henríquez 10B
I have always been a girl who loves to stop and think about the things that surround me, and the reasons for them to function, and to be part of my life. Although I think and try to come up with an answer, there are a lot of things I don't really get and fully understand, but I love them and I love the way they embellish my life. I also did a poll on Instagram in which I asked some of my friends for the most spectacular things in this world that they don't comprehend but make them happy. We need to stop sometimes and contemplate the world around us and its magnificence. So, for this article, I decided to make a list of 25 splendid things I don´t understand and their reasons for me to love them.
Related to humans and senses:
Sounds: I don't get how it is possible for us to hear sounds through waves and feel things because of them. Also, it is an amazing fact that we can hear at different volumes, pitches, and tones. It is absurd how we can recognize an object or a person just by hearing the sound they make. I love sounds because they make me feel alive and they surprise me when I'm not expecting them at all.
Music: I don´t understand how billions of songs exist by different combinations of rhythms, harmonies, melodies, instruments, and sounds, as I said before. For me, it's amazing also, the fact that through music we can get related through words and sounds with the composer, and get his feelings or even catch our own by listening to someone. It is also astounding that we can share sounds with someone through a phone or a cd, that we can store sound waves to transmit them.
Colors: I find astonishing the fact that we have the correct eye specifications in order to see different colors and tones. The human eye can see more or less 100 different colors and it also differentiates them. It's amazing how colors change our perception of images and ideas and help us to feel more emotions through our eyes. Colors certainly are things that just exist and make no sense at all.
Feelings: The fact that we can feel things and just have an emotion or a body reaction when a feeling comes up is just stunning and inexplicable. And worst, the fact that we can feel around 27 different feelings and know which of them is the one we are experiencing is just unreal and extraordinary. I looooove feelings because they really remind me that I´m alive and that I am not a rock. I also think God or the universe speaks to us through feelings and tells us things by sending different emotions when an event occurs.
Actions because of feelings: Going back to the last item, “feelings”, I'm also really amazed by the things feelings can achieve by simply existing. With this, I mean that they become tangible or corporeal by our bodies when we have them. For example, emotions make us cry, shout, talk, jump, run, kiss, etc. Feelings have the power to control what our body decides to do.
Kindness: I find it really bewildering when someone I barely know treats me as if I were his 5 years bestie just because of the vibes I give off or because they find me charming or lovely. It is shocking the capacity of a human to feel attracted in a friendly way to someone they just met only because of a sixth sense that tells them they should be kind to a certain person. I really do think it's beautiful when kindness appears and helps us to bond and to love unexpectedly.
Love: Love is a really crazy thing!! It comes related to the feelings and the actions we already talked about before and even though it isn't a feeling, it is a corporeal emotion we can picture when someone mentions the word. I believe that the capacity of us humans to reach such an especial bonding with someone that makes us feel a certain way is incredible and speechless.
Sixth sense: Sixth sense is amazing, taking into account the fact that it's just our conscience and inner force talking to us about occurrences. For me, the power of the sixth sense is breathtaking due to the marvelous things it is capable to achieve. For example, when you wake up and just get a feeling that tells you not to go out that day. You follow what your sense says but normally you don´t think about what could have happened if that sense wouldn't have appeared. Sixth senses happen for a reason and they are so strong they may avoid your death just by sending a message to your body.
Humans: I really can't figure out how it is that humans work and achieve to exist. It basically is a whole set of thousands of organs and levels which just do great teamwork and achieve our beautiful machines, our bodies, to work and function perfectly to perform the day´s tasks. It is really staggering for me to think that a bunch of little pieces, atoms, molecules, cells, and more things work inside me and make me alive and capable of sharing the best memories ever in my life.
Bones: Have you thought about the strength and the magnificence of bones and the hard work they do every day? I really don't get how astounding the bones are for supporting the weight of all of our muscles, our organs, and our skin and also making it possible for us to move, to run, to jump, and to tell things through the movement.
Kisses and hugs: For me the human contact and touch is great and an important part of my life. I love to feel loved by the people around me through physical contact and for me it’s amazing to be able to feel and develop emotions because of the touch with a person. Touch indeed brings comfort, trust, and a more intimate relationship with the other being.
Human conscience: I find really stupefying our conscience and our minds which store everything that happens to us during all of our years alive. Because of our actions, our conscience can haunt us or either to help us and enhance our joy. It is also responsible for sending us the sixth sense we were talking about before and for programming our minds to see and feel the things we need to, even though we are not aware that we need them.
Applauses: Jajajaja applauses are so funny. I don’t know if you have thought of it but it’s so weird that a person hits his hand with the other to show the one person that they admire them. It’s so comical that it seems like a form of punishment to express our gratitude or astonishment to the other human. Besides that, it is a great way to feel loved! When you are applauded, your brain releases dopamine, the happiness hormone, and makes you feel loved and valuable.
Pictures in our minds: This comes really in hand with imagination and creativity and I notice really sensational the fact that we are able to build from scratch. We can create situations and images out of nowhere and to imagine things that don’t exist and probably will never do. This comes inspired by real ideas or objects we modify in order to invent new ones, or sometimes by our own desires we wish we had and we want to make possible and true in our cores.
Pregnancy: It is not a lie that for everyone, pregnancy and the fact that a woman can develop a new human being in their womb are phenomenal and prodigious. It’s wonderful how just by a sperm and an ovule that merge together life can be created in such a perfect way. This is another sample of the magnificence, harmony, and perfection of the universe and its work.
Relationships: The fact that we, humans, are able to establish relationships and catch feelings with another human being is unbelievable. With this also comes the understanding of each other´s feelings and also the fights. It really is wonderful how we can connect with each other but also fight easily. I really don't get how it is that we relate to each other, but I think it's beautiful and makes my life happier and marvelous.
Smells/ flavors: As same as being able to see colors, flavors, and smells are such a crazy thing that I really don't understand at all! I find amazeballs the fact that we can taste and smell different things and instantly know what we are smelling. For example, if we are crossing the street and we smell fresh paint or gasoline, we instantly know where the smell comes from. Or when we taste food and we are trying to discover what's in it, some flavors are so outstanding that we can distinguish them easily. And also they make our lives better; it isn't a secret that we love eating because tasting our favorite things is delicious and mouthwatering.
Children: I have always thought children are little miracles that are way much more developed than adults because they are still so connected with the other dimension. With my brother, every day I'm completely amazed by the things he tells me. Children can see and perceive things that us adults or teens can't and that's why their creativity and imagination is still intact and perfect. They are really open-minded creatures but as they grow up, society damages their perceptions and thoughts and makes them “boring”. In spite of that, the truth is that kids are the perfect example of harmony, peace, love, and seeing life through tourist eyes which see everything as new and as exciting as it is for them.
Spirituality/ faith: It's extraordinary how we are able to believe there is a stronger force that influences our lives, our actions, and our destiny. And worst, a force in which we can trust blindly just because we have the faith in it and in everything it decides to do with us and with our lives. For me, faith is key to achieve the things I want and to live plainly and serenely because it's getting to fully understand that everything that occurs, happens for a reason and there is something we don't know which is making sure that we go into the correct path and way.
Related to nature and the universe:
Stars: How is it possible for a great mass of energy to produce such a huge amount of light that is visible hundreds of kilometers away from its own place? I find it awesome that we can lift our heads at night and see the sky full of white dots which I don't know why but make my nights more delightful and more wonderful than what they are already.
Flowers/ plants: I really don't get how it is that plants and flowers acquire such divine colors in different ways and patterns. I think this also applies to birds and it makes me confirm that nature is a miracle and a mystery. If you know me you surely know that I'm a huge color fan and I'm in love with everything that has vivid colors or that stands out because of them. Due to this, I'm also a huge fan of flowers and for me planting a black or brown seed and seeing it grow until it reaches its peak and its most amazing colors is like having a baby and seeing how he turns into an amazing human. I really don't know what's inside flowers that make them so beautiful and so gorgeous but I love it.
Sunsets/sunrises/aurora borealis: As similar to the reason above, I can't understand at all where all these sky colors come from. Even if they come from a sunrise, a sunset, or an aurora borealis it's amazing to look up to the sky and see it full of colors, sometimes reds, sometimes blues or purples or pinks but always such a wonderful color scale. I also don't get at all why is it that they are so fascinating to us and our eyes but I love them. And for me, when I see a sunset or a sunrise, it is one of the moments in which I'm most grateful and thankful for my life and for the things I get to live. I don't get why but these sky colors get the best of me and put me in such a reflexive mood which I just find captivating.
The sea: Wow, the sea is marvelous! Apart from being home and a place for millions of creatures, it also has its own life. The sea has its own heart, its own actions, and forms of living. It has such enormous strength and power. It can be friendly and to be nice, but it is also able to be really angry and engulf you in its waters. It's an incredible fact that we humans only know nearly 7% of the total seas and their depths. And it's way much more incredible the fact that probably we are never going to discover it all. Sometimes we aren't able to estimate how big the sea is and we underestimate its power. It's sad but have you thought about how many ships, people, or even planes have drowned at the sea just by its huge force and how it is capable of achieving everything it wants? I don't know about you but for me, that's amazing and really mind-blowing.
Others:
Access to different things of the past: Haven't you thought about how is it possible for us to store knowledge and objects from the past to continue teaching future generations about past history and relics? I find more sense in passing objects such as vinyl, vitrolas, mp3´s, books, televisions, etc. But what about passing music or stories just by orality and simple storytelling? How is it that we, being alive in 2020, can know about ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, even to know about our great grandparents and their life stories? How is it that we have access to songs composed thousands of years ago such as the Hurrian Hymn composed in ancient Mesopotamia in the year 1400 BCE? It is completely mind-blowing that through orality and through words or even sounds, we have access to things made by people thousands of years ago! I don't know if you can picture the hugeness of the issue but it's literally f….. up that we can do that (sorry for the bad words but you get me).
Language: On the other hand, there's this disconcerting thing such as language is. Language not only gives us the ability to understand each other, to help each other, to praise and love each other, to unwind in our daily lives, but also to destroy and to seriously damage and hurt the other one. Language is really messed up and I really can't figure out how it is that the first people here on earth managed to create it from scratch as they did with the letters, the number, and the words. Haven't you thought about these people? What was going on in their minds? How were they so well developed and creative that they managed to create a freaking language which basically saved us from millions, or maybe billions of problems? How is it that we speak, talk each day, and don't realize and measure the greatness of the fact that we can do it? We are able to communicate only because a human once came up with the idea of finding a way to make his communication easier.
I know we take many things for granted because we are used to them. However, when we finally stop and think about how freaking amazing all of those things are, all of our surroundings, all of the things we see daily, the things we do, the things we share, the things we live, it is hard to believe. Why is it that we aren't capable of recognizing all of these amazing things and why is it that we aren't able to be immensely grateful and thankful for them? For us, for the gift of life, for feeling, for being alive, for seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing. Why is it that we take everything for granted and don't realize the perfection of the universe, the harmony in which we live? Making this article has made me way much more conscious of life, of how thankful I am, of how I complain about almost everything when the problem isn't nearly as big as all of the miracles that happen to me every day since I was born. Why is it that we are programmed for complaining about the little black spot on the white page instead of enjoying that 99% of the page that is still white? This is a call to action and I hope at least one of you reads the complete article and gets what I'm feeling right now. Complete ecstasy. Gratitude. Joy. Rejoicing. Hope. And love. Love for the people, for the objects, for nature, for the ideas, and for everything that exists in this world, even evil. Because I get life is perfect and amazing just the way it is.
