What is true friendship?

By: Gabriela Fernández Díaz 10-B

In our daily lives we share a lot of experiences, feelings and memories with the people we call our friends. However, sometimes we take for granted our friendship or we just forget the true meaning of it. So in this article we are gonna dive in together into the true meaning of friendship.

To begin with, the word “friend” has a Germanic origin. It comes from the word “frēond” and it is the present participle of the verb “frēon” which means to love. We can say that a friend is someone we love, appreciate and trust. Therefore we have to know that a true friend is someone who we can trust and be authentic with, and no matter our flaws there are going to be there for us and be honest with us. So... don’t you think they will want the same from our part?

Secondly, I believe that a true friendship is based on good communication, honesty, empathy, love, loyalty, and (as mentioned before) trust. One of the reasons why we need friends in our lives is for those moments in which we are struggling, and going through difficult times. There’s a proverb that says that a real friend sticks closer than a brother, and that is true, they provide us with comfort and encouragement being loyal and steadfast.

Furthermore, a true friend is the one with whom you can rejoice when they rejoice and with whom you can weep when they weep. Is that friend that is going to celebrate your achievements without being envious and who is going to be there when you fall to help you stand up again and move forward.

Ultimately friends deeply impact our lives, so how well are we choosing our friends? Are we actually being good friends? Remember that:

“True friends aren’t the ones who make your problems disappear. They are the ones who won’t disappear when you’re facing problems.”- Anonymous
