World Wildlife Day

By: Catalina Zárate Osorio 10ºA

We tend to forget that they’re many special dates every month. We go past these dates as if they didn't even exist, as if they were never a thing. On march 3rd is World Wildlife Day, such a beautiful date to celebrate and one day that should be spoken about more often. World Wildlife Day is ment to celebrate the beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora, and also it is used to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that their conservation provides to humanity. Now, to give a little more background, the reason why world wildlife is celebrated on this date is that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed on 3 March, 1973, so the United Nations General Assembly decided World Wildlife Day should be celebrated on that day.

Each year there is a special theme for this date, for example this year the theme was 'Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet'. The day celebrated the central role of forests, forest species and ecosystems services in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally, particularly of indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forest. The theme is also linked with some of the Sustainable Development Goals like #1 (no poverty), #12 (responsible consumption and production), #13 (climate action), and #15 (life on land).

Even though March 3rd is already over, there are so many things you can still do to celebrate the World Wildlife Day. In the first place, you could do some research on the topic by watching conferences or videos for educational and awareness purposes. In second place, you could collaborate with local zoos, parks, botanical gardens, national parks, aquariums, or museums and encourage them to celebrate World Wildlife Day. Finally, you could raise your voice and spread information through your social media or talk to your friends and to the people close to you about this day and its importance. You don't have to do extraordinary big things, by simply being interested in World Wildlife Day and the topics that are involved in it, you are already doing enough.

I hope this article is going to wake your interest in these topics, I believe it is important that we pay attention to these kinds of dates. I also believe that celebrating the  beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora, and  raising awareness of the multitude of benefits that their conservation provides to humanity should not be something of just one day. We should celebrate and talk about  this everyday. There are many small things that you can do to improve awareness and knowledge about World Wildlife Day, so feel free to take some minutes of your time and do some research, sign some petitions, listen to conferences, there are a lot of things you can do. You just need to take action.

Happy World Wildlife Day Everyone!!!
