Sustainable fashion: The future of the fashion industry

Since the rise of Fast Fashion at the beginning of 2000’s, the access to low-price clothes has been unstoppable. The accelerated production of textiles has allowed brands such as Zara and H&M to take out 24 collections a year, which means that every two weeks you’ll be seeing totally new clothes at their stores. With this consumerism philosophy, fashion became the second biggest contaminating industry because of their water waste and CO2 emissions within the production of clothes. The system needs a change, we need a change, and that transformation is called sustainable fashion.

If you don’t know what sustainable fashion is, let me give you the official definition. According to Green Strategy, “sustainable fashion can be defined as clothing, shoes and accessories that are manufactured, marketed and used in the most sustainable manner possible, taking into account both environmental and socio-economic aspects”. In practice, it’s needed the ecological improvement of the product’s life cycle from design, raw material production, manufacturing, transportation, storage and distribution, to use, reuse, repair, remake and recycle of the product and its components. All in all, a 100% eco-friendly process.

Nonetheless, this is not the only way of making sustainable fashion. A diagram made by Dr. Anna Brismar in 2019 shows seven forms of a consent production and consumption of fashion in order to help the planet:

As we can see, not only by buying eco-processed clothes we can be a part of the sustainable fashion movement, other options like reting, making diy’s, and shopping second hand are strategies that search to promote a more environmentally, socially and ethically conscious industry. Although the ideal is that clothes and other fashion products should be produced and consumed in all the manners described in the image above, our reality isn't there yet. However, what we should rather seek is that every person tries to find their own form of a more sustainable fashion, even when it may entail a higher price tag.

It is no secret that the earth is in danger. Even though everyday more vital resources are getting scarce, the main point of sustainable fashion is preventing this. The hope of this article is to make you realize that there are other ways to be trendy, other ways of making a cute outfit rather than purchasing on Fast Fashion. Our planet needs help and there are no excuses for not starting some change in our own closet. As Emma Watson said: “as consumers we have so much power to change the world by just being careful in what we buy”.
