Stop Asian Hate

“#StopAsianHate” has recently been trending on every social media platform after a shooting in Atlanta, Georgia that killed eight people. Six of the victims were Asian women. Investigators claim that it’s too early to determine the suspects motive; however, authorities have noticed over the last year a “recent” pattern of violent crimes committed against the Asian community.
After the passing of George Floyd in 2020, the black man whose murder set off months of riots when a video of a white police officer kneeling on his neck was released; the Black Lives Matter movement gained renewed attention. So too has renewed attention been brought to discrimination towards Asian citizens and immigrants. Celebrities and influencers have spoken up about the situation and are calling for people to not be silent about the increase in hate crimes against the Asian community. Many of the victims have been attacked, harassed, verbally and physically assaulted, and have even recently been blamed for the rise of the Coronavirus. As a matter of fact, former US president Donald Trump takes responsibility on racist language; Trump has called the virus the “China virus” and the “kung flu”. In addition, the Stop AAPI Hate Reporting Center, documented 3,795 hate incidents aimed at Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders between March 19, 2020 and February 28 of this year.
The least thing that the world needs right now is even more violence and discrimination. It’s been about enough time to set differences aside. Whether it’s race, ethnicity, or gender intolerance, what we need right now is a changed mindset. Humanity is facing enormous problems, and we can’t keep on adding more to the list. Coming from someone who’s part of Gen-Z, I believe that we can’t keep up with this behavior and we must take action now. Gen-Z isn’t ‘soft’, ‘crystal-like’, or easily offended; people who say this are just mad that they couldn’t get away with being homophobic and racist. Of course nothing should be taken to an extreme like over cancelling culture, but problems like racism should have definitely been ‘cancelled’ long time ago.
