Women’s day
By: Luisa Lafaurie 10ºA
March 8th is not a day to congratulate women for being women. It is a day to commemorate and remember our fight, our struggle, and everything we have been through to get to the point that we are today, even though we are still going through this fight. Most people know the reason why this day is celebrated on March 8th, but for those who do not, in short, it is to honor the 129 women who died in the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, in a fire at a factory fighting for better working conditions. This was one of the first big manifestations of women fighting for their rights, a date that marked our history, and we commemorate it as “Women’s day”. If you want to know more, feel free to research and educate yourself more about this event.
Thanks to these women and many others through history, today we can choose our paths. We can have an education and specialize in whatever we want, we are represented in politics, sports, science, and arts. We have the freedom to decide what to wear, what to believe, and what to say without being burned at the stake. We can decide whether we want to marry and have kids or be independent. We are as loud as we have ever been, and that is why I am proud to be a woman.
As women, we have been eclipsed and ignored by men many times, but it is our time to shine. In the past years, we have come together, supporting and accepting each other, embracing who we are, and owning our beauty. March 8th is a day to commemorate this achievement in this path to overcome this great overshadow we have suffered. It is a day to make noise and be proud to be a woman. It is to honor and remember all the history behind us and what is to come. It is to empower and support each other and to show everyone how strong we really are. Let's keep on walking on this path of love and support and make all these years of struggle worth it.
