Oprah Winfrey Royal family interview

Written by María Paula Marín

On March the 7th, an interview between Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Oprah Winfrey was aired on CBS. The interview stirred controversy and was the matter of the moment all over the world. Many of Markle’s declarations left thousands of people dumbfounded; questions and hatred towards the British royal family’s transparency arose more than ever.

The TV special marked the couple’s first appearance after announcing their plans to step back from senior roles in the royal family.  Meghan began the interview by revealing bits and pieces of the couple’s private lives, including that the two were married three days before their official wedding, and that the second child they are expecting is a girl. However, things began to heat up when Meghan discussed the difficulties of her life as a working royal. She explained that she was forced to suppress her outspoken nature and give up her personal freedom. She was also denied access to her passport, driver's license, and car keys. Things took a darker turn when the Duchess claimed thoughts of suicide incredibly difficult to bear. "I was really ashamed to say it at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry especially, because I know how much loss he has suffered. But I knew that if I didn't say it, that I would do it -- and I just didn't want to be alive anymore," stated Markle. The couple also told Winfrey about how uncomfortable they felt when the Royal Family discussed quite often about how dark their son Archie’s skin color would be. All these situations made Meghan describe herself as the victim of an image-obsessed Buckingham Palace. Despite all these allegations, Meghan told Winfrey that it was important to differentiate the royal family from "the people running the institution." The Duchess of Sussex said she had been welcomed into the family itself and Queen Elizabeth II, Harry's grandmother, had always been wonderful, warm and welcoming. Furthermore, Harry said that the decision to step back brought financial consequences and affected his relationship with his family. He said his father, Prince Charles, briefly stopped taking his calls.

The points addressed in this article were the main ones that stirred controversy; nevertheless, for a more complete experience you may check out the full interview on the CBS website.
